We are finally at a point where we can replace banking rails without burdening users with crypto bloat. Here is how we build invisible infrastructure.

The problem: You are staring at the plumbing

When you send money on Venmo or use a Visa card, you never ask: “Is this settling via an ACH batch or a SWIFT transfer?”

You don’t care about the plumbing. You care about the result: Did the money arrive?

For ten years, Web3 builders have forced users to stare at the pipes. We made them manage connection protocols (wallets), pay for the transaction fuel (gas), and navigate routing logic (bridging). This isn’t just bad user experience; it’s a dealbreaker for mainstream adoption.

To cross the chasm, we must treat blockchain exactly like we treat TCP/IP: as an invisible infrastructure layer. The end user should see “USD Balance” and “Send Money.” The fact that the value moves via stablecoins on a decentralized ledger is an implementation detail, not a feature.

The business case: Why swap the backend?

If the user shouldn’t see the blockchain, why use it at all? Why not stick to Stripe or SWIFT?

The answer isn’t “decentralization” as a buzzword. It’s efficiency.

Traditional banking rails are built on infrastructure from the 1970s. For a global platform, this creates friction that kills margins.

Here is the concrete difference we see at Kiip when sending a $50 payout to a freelancer in the Philippines:

Incumbents are excellent for the US and EU. But for the Global South, LATAM, and Southeast Asia, old rails fail. By swapping the backend, a platform instantly expands its addressable market to anyone with an internet connection.

Killing the external wallet

The biggest friction point has always been the external wallet (e.g., MetaMask).

Asking a normal user to install a browser extension, write down 24 words, and fund a wallet just to receive a payout is a non-starter. It destroys conversion.

At Kiip, we leverage the modern stack (account abstraction) to build integrated wallets. This is “non-custodial” (the user owns the funds) but “invisible” (it feels like a Web2 app). Kiip even abstracts away the complexities of blockchain for developers integrating Kiip.

Here is the stack that makes the technology disappear:

1. Identity: Passkeys over seed phrases

We replaced the “seed phrase” with passkeys (WebAuthn). Users create a cryptographic key pair using the secure enclave on their device (FaceID, TouchID).

2. Smart accounts (ERC-4337)

Instead of standard “EOA” wallets, we deploy smart contract wallets. This separates the “signer” (the passkey) from the “account” (the contract).

At dOrg, I spent two years building Zodiac modules for Safe - parts of a infrastructure that now secures over $100 billion in assets. That work taught me what’s possible when you decouple identity from accounts. We can program recovery logic directly into the wallet. If a user loses their phone, they don’t lose their money. Social recovery solves the “lost keys” nightmare that has plagued crypto since the beginning.

3. Gas abstraction (paymasters)

In a standard crypto transaction, you need ETH to pay for gas. This is a massive hurdle for a user who just wants to receive USDC. We utilize paymasters - smart contracts that sponsor gas fees.

The Result:

The platform treats gas as operational overhead (like AWS server costs). The user interacts purely with their balance, never realizing a blockchain fee was paid.

The reality check: The last mile

I’m a pragmatist. I know that instant settlement on-chain is useless if a user in Brazil can’t buy groceries with it.

This is the “last mile” problem.

While the blockchain backend handles the global movement instantly, we must integrate with local payment rails (PIX in Brazil, SPEI in Mexico, SEPA in Europe) for the final step.

This is where the “crypto anarchist” dream meets reality. To build this, you need strict adherence to KYC and AML laws. We ensure that while the transport is decentralized, the exit points are compliant. This hybrid approach is the only way to build sustainable infrastructure.

We are moving away from “crypto apps” defined by their friction. The best blockchain applications of the next decade won’t look like blockchain applications at all. They will simply be better, faster, cheaper apps that happen to run on chain.

The technology is finally good enough to disappear.

If you’ve ever designed a custodian solution for Ethereum, you might have found it surprisingly straightforward. Creating wallets from mnemonics, managing deposits and withdrawals, and even implementing multisig solutions using Safe (onchain) or MPC/TSS (offchain) are relatively simple tasks. This ease stems from Ethereum’s account model, which treats balances as fungible assets in individual accounts.

Bitcoin, however, operates fundamentally differently due to its UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) architecture. This creates unique challenges for custodians managing Bitcoin at scale.

Understanding the UTXO Model

In Bitcoin’s UTXO model:

• Every deposit requires a unique address (locking script)

• Money behaves like physical currency notes rather than a simple account balance

• UTXOs are atomic units - when you spend one, you must spend it entirely

• Partial spending requires change - similar to receiving change when paying with cash

While Bitcoin is certainly fungible, the mechanics of how it works differ significantly from Ethereum. Think of UTXOs as individual checks: if you want to spend a check, you must spend it in full. To spend a partial amount, you write a new check back to yourself for the change.

This creates a unique challenge for custodians: efficiently managing potentially millions of “checks” of varying amounts.

The Scale Problem: Managing Millions of UTXOs

Imagine managing millions of UTXOs across thousands of user deposits, processing thousands of withdrawals daily. When a user requests a withdrawal of 0.1 BTC, how do you efficiently select which UTXOs to spend?

This isn’t just a theoretical problem—it’s the core challenge for exchanges, bridges, and payment processors handling Bitcoin at scale.

Why Standard Algorithms Fail at Scale

Approach 1: Branch and Bound (Bitcoin Core’s Method)

Bitcoin Core uses the Branch and Bound algorithm for optimal UTXO selection:

Volition by Jesse Miller

Jesse, a dOrg member, recently introduced his project: Volition: An open-source, Rust-specialized AI agent library and CLI coding assistant.

Volition empowers developers to interact with their codebases using natural language, supporting multiple AI providers (OpenAI, Google, Ollama, and more) and the emerging Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard.

Built with extensibility in mind, Volition uses a strategy pattern architecture to support various interaction models, including PlanExecute and CompleteTask.

Its aim is to push the boundaries of AI-assisted development. Jesse’s future roadmap for Volition includes even more advanced agent strategies, smarter context management, and higher performance with smaller models.

As we kick off 2025, we’re taking a moment to look back at the incredible journey that was 2024. From exciting collaborations to overcoming complex challenges, it was a year of growth, innovation, and milestones that set the stage for an even brighter future.

2024 in review: Amazing Projects we built together:

Last year, we had the privilege of partnering with visionary teams to bring impactful ideas to life.

Here’s a glimpse of the standout projects we contributed on in 2024:

⚪️ Usual

The goal of this engagement is to support Usual Protocol in its development journey. Our collaboration began with the creation of subgraphs and has expanded to smart contract development.

Our team is building the necessary subgraphs to facilitate Usual Protocol's integrations with various organizations it is partnering with, giving them support on the smart contract development, audits and protocol development. We’re super proud to say that they’ve achieved an incredible milestone of $1.8B in TVL. See more in DefiLlama

🌱 Octant

The primary objective of this engagement is to establish the technical foundation for the iteration of their public funds distribution protocol. This includes integrating sustainable funding mechanisms to support public goods, designing incentives to attract and reward user participation, and ensuring the system’s flexibility and scalability to meet evolving needs.

Additionally, we will progressively decentralize the governance model, reducing reliance on centralized administration and promoting modularity for long-term adaptability and growth. Our efforts with Octant are just starting!

🧠 Gaia

Our partnership is centered around an integration with The Graph, a leading decentralized protocol for indexing and querying blockchain data. This effort involves building open-source tools for subgraph indexing within GaiaNet, designed to help developers efficiently query real-time data and streamline the creation of decentralized applications on the GaiaNet platform.

By combining GaiaNet’s AI capabilities with The Graph’s robust API, we’re equipping developers with tools to enhance data accessibility and usability across both platforms.

🖖🏽Gnosis

We continue to support Zodiac by contributing to its modules and implementing more customizations in partnership with other DAOs, such as Karpatkey. Additionally, we are building the prototype for Enclave, which is publicly available here. This prototype is highly innovative and new.

🌐Tezos Homebase

Tezos Homebase is now one of three apps that we are developing and maintaining in partnership with Tezos Commons. In 2024 the app got a long-awaited feature: Arbitrary Contract Interaction, something quite common in the EVM space, but for Tezos we needed to develop it at a low abstraction level.

We added two more products:

• Trustless.Business decentralized dispute resolution

• werule.io (DAO administration framework built on top of OpenZeppelin Governor). Launching in February.

These products work together as a holistic jurisdiction comparable in scope to what the legacy territorial administrations (a.k.a. countries) provide. We’re excited to start promoting these really soon!

🪐Saturn Series

Saturn Series decided to engage with our team in order to fulfill a mission: to support them in revolutionizing decentralized storytelling.

Our focus was to analyze, refactor, and test existing smart contracts, aligning them with industry standards for clarity, security, and efficiency, accelerating Saturn’s development roadmap and tech expectations.

With 2024 behind us, we’re more energized than ever to make 2025 a year of even greater innovation and collaboration. Thank you to our clients, partners, and supporters for being part of this journey.

What We’re Excited for in 2025

At dOrg, we’re constantly exploring how emerging technologies intersect to create new opportunities. As we step into 2025, we’re particularly excited about the growing convergence of AI and web3. Here's what we're keeping an eye on:

• Decentralized AI Models: AI tools running on decentralized infrastructure will make intelligence more accessible and censorship-resistant. More collaboration, less centralization.

• Smarter Smart Contracts: The integration of AI into smart contracts promises more adaptive automation, enabling real-time decision-making and predictive capabilities that enhance blockchain functionality.

• AI-Enhanced On-Chain Governance: DAOs will leverage AI to process vast datasets for better decision-making, resource allocation, and governance optimization. We expect 2025 to be focused on more efficient decentralized organizations.

• Data Privacy and Sovereignty: With AI and blockchain working together, individuals and businesses can maintain ownership, security and innovation and keep building what we like to call “dAI Apps”. The main desire: WEB3 AND AI ADOPTION.

• AI for Cross-Chain Interoperability: AI will play a critical role in streamlining operations across blockchain networks, improving efficiency and creating a seamless ecosystem.

A case study by dOrg around the development of the front-end, back-end and web3 integrations for the GoodDollar/GoodCollective MVP — a platform for paying frontline climate stewards for their verified climate action.

Abstract

GoodCollective is a series of smart contracts and a dApp built atop the GoodDollar protocol. Its objective is twofold:

1) to channel donations (targeted distribution of Universal Basic Income), using crypto, to individuals who fit specific criteria.
2) to tie those payment to specific people and activities (e.g. those verifiably completing climate-positive activities) to transparently report on detailed payment flow to frontline communities.

The platform is designed to maximize the value paid to local individuals on the ground, making the most impact while reducing intermediaries and costs of both payment deployment and climate impact measurement.

For the initial pilot and primary payment pool, Silvi has served as a climate action verification partner, and the infrastructure is designed to work with a variety of similar partners. GoodCollective was made possible by a grant from Climate Collective and in-kind technical and product design support by GoodDollar. dOrg teamed up to develop a dApp interface to display activity on the underlying GoodCollective contracts.

The solution design and payment mechanisms were provided by GoodDollar, a mission-driven protocol and cryptocurrency known for successfully onboarding hard-to-reach communities to crypto wallets. GoodDollar's decentralized payment infrastructure enables direct Universal Basic Income payments to individuals.

GoodDollar requested our support for the front-end, back-end and web3 integrations coding of the GoodDollar / GoodCollective MVP. We used the designs, user flows, and wireframes provided by GoodDollar / GoodCollective to facilitate this MVP development.

Background

GoodDollar is a permissionless protocol built with the goal of reducing wealth inequality and providing economic empowerment to all individuals. The protocol creates a sustainable digital currency, known as GoodDollar tokens (G$), that can be distributed to users worldwide.

The protocol operates on the principles of Universal Basic Income (UBI), where a fixed amount of G$ is distributed to users on a regular basis. One of the key features of the GoodDollar protocol is its use of smart contracts to automate the distribution of G$ tokens. This ensures transparency and efficiency in the distribution process, eliminating the need for intermediaries and reducing transaction costs.

We developed a mobile-first MVP React Native web app and Subgraph database to integrate GoodDollar’s GoodCollective smart contracts.

Focus Areas

To get this milestone-based project rolling, we divided it into three main milestones: back-end development, front-end development, and web3 integrations.

For the back-end development, we focused on creating a database with specific attributes like the project name, image, description, and links to the website, Twitter, Instagram, and Smart Contract on Celo Explorer. We also designed the database schema to include entities such as Project, User, Donation, and Transaction, each with detailed attributes necessary to the utility of the platform.

These entities are interconnected, allowing any user to track interactions, financial transactions, and project updates in real-time. Our subgraph organizes on-chain data for quicker queries in the GoodCollective app. The GoodCollective app updates the GoodCollective smart contracts through transactions. The subgraph can be queried by any user. Explore the full Subgraph schema for all technical details.

Moving on to front-end development and web3 integrations, we built mobile-first though made accommodations for how specific elements rendered on a desktop browser and we integrated smart contracts developed by GoodDollar with both the front-end and back-end of the dApp. Improvements and enhancements have been made since dOrg’s involvement, executed by the GoodDollar team.

The dApp was deployed on Celo but works on any chain, however, the transactions can only happen on Celo.

The stack to develop the MVP was:

• React Native

• Subgraphs

• TypeScript

• AssemblyScript

• WAGMI

• GoodDollar and GoodCollective smart contracts systems

Conclusion

GoodCollective has evolved from an MVP into a fully functional pilot and stands as a testament to our joint efforts, providing a platform for targeted distribution of segmented UBI. This can encompass a range of different initiatives such as Conservation Basic Income, where individuals receive fair compensation for their valuable climate-positive services, as well as initiatives to support socioeconomic collectives like Women’s UBI or Emergency Crisis Collectives such as Natural Disaster UBI or Refugee UBI, among other potential applications.

Ultimately, GoodCollective is committed to empowering individuals and communities by providing direct digital payments to those who need it the most.

What is it like to be a builder at dOrg?

The thing that's great about dOrg is the support structure you get around the jobs you handle.

It's not just you as a freelancer attacking a project, it's a team of people working to make sure that your experience is as good as it can be. The projects are interesting, and I see every one of them as a learning opportunity. In the end, being a builder at dOrg means working in an emerging industry, where new ideas and outside-of-the-box thinking should be encouraged.

What do you find most challenging about dOrg?

No job comes without its challenges, and I think that builders should bring their own creativity and approach to every job they work on. Every job you accept should be the "most challenging" aspect of your work with dOrg, and that's something that should be celebrated. Without that, we'd all just be repeating old ideas in new technologies.

What would you like others to know about dOrg?

It may seem intimidating to join at first, as dOrg has an amazing community of highly talented builders. But all of us are here to help each other out whenever possible. We celebrate each other's victories, and help each other out when in need.

I feel like I still have a lot to do to prove myself to all the amazing people here, and I'm looking forward to doing so. It's a pleasure working with everyone here, and I've seen first-hand what these people are capable of.

What is your typical day like?

I try to stick to a relatively consistent regiment of getting up early and front-loading my work for the day. Of course, I don't beat myself up over minutes, it's all about maintaining a schedule I can work with. I usually take about an hour to myself and then get to hacking on whatever is that day's task, and I usually stop when I know that I have achieved something.

I take a break and afterwards I usually work on my own projects, or do some leisure activities, but it usually ends up being the former. :)

Having the flexibility with my working hours means a lot to me, as the day-to-day may change, but my general structure always stays the same.

What do you find most challenging about dOrg?
Switching between projects—each with its own focus, team, and required skill set—is challenging, but it has significantly strengthened my problem-solving abilities. This diversity of experience has helped me adapt quickly and develop a versatile approach, making me feel equipped to tackle almost any new challenge with confidence.

What would you say is the best thing that has happened to you since joining dOrg?
The best part of joining dOrg has been the opportunity to work with a diverse team of talented individuals who are passionate about decentralization and the future of web3. This environment has expanded my knowledge and skill set immensely, introducing me to novel technologies and frameworks. Additionally, the structure at dOrg, where we’re partial owners of the DAO based on our contributions, has made me feel both valued and motivated, knowing that our collective success directly impacts us all.

Mackenzie: SoDA Symposium: Bridging the Gap in Digital Asset Reporting

Mackenzie took part in the launch of the Statement of Digital Assets Whitepaper (V2), speaking alongside crypto accounting leaders from ​a16z crypto, Bitwave, Deloitte, EY, OP Labs, and Propeller Industries.

Hash Basis published a new publication

Mackenzie wrote a new blog post for her project Hash Basis. In the article “Accounting for Restricted Token Awards in the CELO ReleaseGold() Contract”, they explored restricted token awards on the CELO blockchain and their proper accounting and tax treatment in the U.S. If you’re more into videos, they’ve also uploaded it to Youtube.

What is it like to be a builder at dOrg?

I've never been happier being part of such a professional team as dOrg, which specializes in Web3. It feels like I've found my niche, one I’ve been searching for many years.

What do you find most challenging about dOrg?

I recall the onboarding being somewhat of a challenge; it felt like traveling to the future where everything is remote, including communication, decision-making, and payments. On top of that, the ability to vote on the organization's future is truly groundbreaking.

What would you like others to know about dOrg?

You'll never find such a professional and friendly remote team capable of building virtually anything from scratch.

What is your typical day like?

I wake up at 7 AM and prepare breakfast for my family—my wife, two kids, and two cats. The next phase is either hitting the gym or swimming. After a cup of coffee, I plan my day, as I believe discipline and organization are key to success for both myself and my clients. 

My mornings usually involve meetings with local team members to sync up. The rest of the day is my execution phase, where I work in sprints, continuing until the evening. At the end of the day, I check my deliverables and reflect on ways to improve my productivity. I approach my workday like a workout at the gym: regular effort is necessary for growth.

By 7 PM, I return home to my lovely family and strive to spend the rest of the evening without phones, as home and family time is where I recharge for the next day.

P.S. While this pattern isn't 100% consistent every day, it serves as a template that helps me stick to my long term goals. As a human being I fail many times to be as productive as I want.

What is it like to be a builder at dOrg?

When I joined dOrg, most of my experiences were administration, marketing, and growth—even though at that time, I didn’t call it that. My main tasks were in the operational side: finding clients, helping the organization scale, conducting interviews with applicants, and then, once we had clients, coordinating project management. Specifically, I worked on some projects like Rarible and Polywrap.

Being a builder at dOrg means that you’ll meet experienced, smart people that will teach you a lot about the ecosystem, how the business works. Being a builder at dOrg allowed me to find an overlap between what I was previously doing and the new things I wanted to do, like programming; and what I didn’t even know I wanted to do, which is web3.

Through dOrg I was able to focus on web3 and at the same time while participating in client’s projects, I had the time to learn more about growth and programming, especially in the AI space. dOrg allowed me to participate and be involved in projects that are at the cutting edge of technology, blending Web3 and AI, like Saturn Series.

Being a builder at dOrg means you can choose the projects you want to collaborate on, and also it gives you the freedom and flexibility of remote work, working with very skilled people, and always having a project manager and a technical lead who drive the project forward with the team to ensure success. And there are many advantages of remote work, like being able to travel without having to stop working.

Working on an DAO that was one of the first recognized in the United States as a blockchain Limited Liability Company provides you security, knowing that dOrg has your back if any issues arise and its community will support you. Also, in the tech side, dOrg will cover all your work needs with all the available tech tools, to make sure you are comfortable and can achieve all the project’s requirements seamlessly.

What do you find most challenging about dOrg?

The most challenging part was learning how to work in a DAO, where there isn’t a traditional boss or CEO. Instead, it’s a decentralized organization where meritocracy matters more than hierarchy, and the decision-making process is different from what you’d find in typical companies. At dOrg, there’s no set list of tasks; the work and value you bring are up to you and your initiative.

Adapting to this model—where consensus is needed before making any big decisions that may affect its members—was new for me and required learning a different way of managing. But it was also refreshing to know that at dOrg, what matters most is the value you bring, not your title. It’s all about what you can contribute with your skills. 

What would you say is the best thing that has happened to you since joining dOrg?

What I’ve enjoyed most about joining dOrg is how much I’ve learned about Web3, being part of a group of knowledgeable people who are always willing to share, and growing both professionally and personally.

One of the highlights was starting with Polywrap or Web3 API alongside other dOrg members. We built a new team from scratch to meet various market needs at that time, and over time, that team evolved into Agentcoin. It’s where I’ve found myself doing what I truly enjoy while learning new things every day.

Working remotely was also a new experience for me, and it’s opened up so many possibilities compared to office work. The difference is huge, and my first formal experience with remote work was here at dOrg. If it weren’t for dOrg, I wouldn’t have learned everything I know about Web3 today, and maybe I wouldn’t have discovered it at all.

In short, dOrg has been a growth opportunity for me, opening doors for my future and introducing me to new friends and incredibly talented colleagues.

What is your work style like?

I worked most of my career at startups so I am generally fine with fast iterations and maintain pragmatism when it comes to specific tools or approaches - engineering it's all about tradeoffs and making them explicit is always better.

What do you do when you are not working?

Spend time with family. Some sports. 

What would you say is the best thing that has happened to you since joining dOrg? 

The people I met through dOrg are clearly the best part. I look forward to interacting more IRL. 

What is it like to be a builder at dOrg?

It's great to be able to pick projects you are interested in and to control one's own calendar and involvement. Also the diversity of clients and technologies helps staying on top of industry trends.

What do you find most challenging about dOrg?

I suppose it's challenging to scale dOrg itself. As a builder, getting used to a fully remote setup can be a challenge for someone who’s not experienced with it.
